 Music in Lent

  • CANCELLED: Fauré Requiem (March 29)
Forum (March 22 following the 10 a.m. service)
The performance of a Choral Requiem to explore the mysteries of life, death, and what follows has become a Lenten tradition at St. Elizabeth’s on the Sunday before Palm Sunday. An outstanding group of instrumentalists joins the choir. On Sunday, March 29 the Senior Choir, Galletly Scholars and select Junior and Youth choristers will be performing the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré at the 10 a.m. service. This is a challenging, seven movement, 35-minute major choral work. More information about this offering may be found here.

  • Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil
These services provide more musical offerings. The Easter Sunday 9:30 a.m. Family Service features the Cherub, Junior and Youth Choirs with the Senior Choir joining the service for Händel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.” At the 11:15 a.m. service the Senior Choir sings and the “Hallelujah Chorus” along with instrumental offerings are also presented at both services.

Joining the Choir

The Senior Choir welcomes new members throughout the year. We have a wonderful group of dedicated volunteer singers as well as an outstanding quartet of soloists. Every volunteer member of the Senior Choir may have conflicts from time to time with our rehearsals or need to be away from St. Elizabeth’s on a given Sunday. We plan our repertoire in advance and have the extraordinary luxury of having our soloists fully support each section in the choir. Some of our members are only able to devote rehearsal time to the Advent Concert, or the Requiem the week before Palm Sunday.

While the music requires rehearsal, the schedule is flexible. The learning process is a team effort. We are all incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful music in our lives. Please come to one of our rehearsals after church in the upstairs choir room.

Regularly scheduled rehearsals will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Sundays. Rehearsals are always open to anyone interested in singing with us or simply to come and watch a rehearsal. Joining the choir can occur at any time during the year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the choral program.

Music in Advent and Christmas

  • Advent Concert
The highlight of the choral season is a free concert for family, friends and neighbors. The programing includes wonderful arrangements of familiar carols as well as outstanding choral works, accompanied by a chamber orchestra, framed by the Christmas narrative. An emphasis is placed on programing music that will be engaging for both seasoned audiences of choral concerts as well as families with children. The concert runs one hour with no intermission. A festive reception follows in the Parish Hall.

  • Tree Lighting
Each year we gather on the front lawn in the last moments of twilight to turn on the lights on our small (but growing!) live Christmas tree on the front lawn of the church.  By lantern, candle, and other lights, we will sing carols of the season - accompanied by a wonderful brass quartet for about 30 minutes, followed by hot chocolate and refreshments. This is an unmatched opportunity to create a holiday memory of holy and festive joy suffused with some of the most beloved music of our culture.  Families, children of all ages, neighbors, holiday houseguests, resident shepherds, and visiting kings are all welcome.
  • Christmas Eve
Our Christmas Eve service at 10 p.m. features the Adult Choir, soloists and instrumentalists in wonderful choral and instrumental offerings. This is a perfect service if you are looking for the peace, beauty, and musical richness that this service offers.

Music in Lent

  • Choral Evensong (March 7)
A service of Evensong, celebrating the important support of the Galletly Scholarship Program, will be offered on Saturday, March 7 at 4:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. The Galletly Scholarship program offers scholarships to younger choristers who have demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to the choral program at St. Elizabeth’s. These scholarships afford an opportunity to our younger choristers to attend excellent summer choral programs, most notably in Newport, RI.
