Baptisms
Baptisms normally occur within the context of a Sunday Eucharist. Prior to a baptism the candidate (if an adult) or the parents and godparents (if the candidate is a child) will meet with a member of the clergy on a day other than the day of the service to discuss the service and the implications, large and small, of becoming a Christian through Baptism.
Selecting godparents for children is an important decision. Godparents (also called "sponsors") may be legal guardians but need not be; those two roles are distinct.
The primary qualification for godparents is that they be baptized, active Christians (of any denomination) who are fully committed to supporting the nurture and growth of the candidate in accordance with the promises made in the baptismal service.
Godparents need not necessarily be Episcopalians. Godparents may, but need not, be family members or close friends. Godparents have a religious responsibility and it is recommended that they be chosen primarily for their desire and ability to fulfill that role.
